The Magic of Art: Class of 2022

Statement from Tom Christy, Head of Art at Chenderit School:

“This year’s Art students were a fabulous group of young people. Some of them I have taught for seven years. Others, just two. This was the year group who had to abandon their GCSEs, when the first national lockdown was ordered in March 2020. I was isolating at home when the news came through, and had to email the class a message to be read out on that unexpectedly-early-last-day-of-school.

“It was a sentimental message. ‘The magic of art,’ I wrote to them all, ‘is about creating stuff that you are proud of. This work exists only because you do. I hope you will continue practising your skills and doing amazing things and that you will continue being artists in your own right.’ And on and on, I went, until there were tears in my eyes.

“We have been so impressed with this cohort. Their A level work reflects the passion, dedication, commitment and energy that each of them have invested throughout the duration of the course. The exhibition here is just a snapshot of the work completed over the last two years. It gives an insight into what they explored and what they have achieved. We are proud of them, and the magic that they have conjured.”

They have created work as unique as themselves, and have done so with integrity, with warmth and with positivity.
